Due to circumstances related to the COVID-19 crisis, Encinitas 101 has currently let go of their entire staff. Irene Pyun, their Executive Director is solely working the phones. Encinitas 101 is a non-profit that functions as a business association for the downtown Encinitas district. They support local businesses with ongoing promotion and coordinating community events which keep Encinitas vibrant. With COVID-19, Encinitas 101 has lost the ability to hold events, which normally fund all of their expenses and payroll. Encinitas 101 is currently teaming up with several local organizations to support the Cardiff-by-the-Sea Foundation, which is attempting to raise grant money for local businesses that have been impacted by the pandemic. Thanks to these efforts and sacrifice, local businesses will be able to apply for mini grants through an online application at www.encinitassupportfund.com. The Encinitas Self Storage contribution of $500.00 will go towards the administrative costs of remaining open and the local business grant. Thank you, Encinitas 101 for all your efforts in allowing Encinitas to thrive.

Community Giving Project
At San Diego Self Storage our philosophy is to provide help and support whenever the need arises. Remaining active members in the communities we serve is extremely important to our company. For the second straight year, each of our 20 facilities is given the chance to make a donation to an organization of their choosing. Throughout the year, each facility will hand deliver their charitable donation to a deserving foundation or organization.

With capable and dedicated organizations like SWAG, the team felt they are helping to make a positive impact. Monetary donations typically go towards gift cards for fast food and groceries, clothing items, socks and shoes. The team at San Marcos Mini Storage has chosen Casa De Amparo, which is a tax exempt, non-profit organization and a major force in the field of child abuse prevention. Partnering with the greater San Diego community, Casa de Amparo ensures that children and their families receive unique and innovative services for healing, for stopping child mistreatment of any kind, and for ending generational cycles of abuse. The result is a community where child abuse and neglect are not tolerated, and where awareness about and prevention of child abuse are priorities.
Casa de Amparo was established in 1978 and was started by a group of local women concerned with the domestic violence and the welfare of children. In 2012 Casa De Amparo Residential Services relocated from Oceanside to the San Marcos Casa Kids Campus, which sits on 11.4 acres of land. Residential Services is the only licensed residential treatment center in San Diego County serving pregnant and/or parenting foster youth.
The San Marcos Mini Storage donation will ensure that Casa kids receive the care they need to heal, grow, and begin to develop healthy relationships.

The Encinitas Chamber of Commerce has been adversely affected by Covid-19. CEO, Roz Mancinelli, just joined the organization in September of 2019, and recently had to resign. The majority of income for the Chamber is derived from public events. These events not only benefit the Chamber but also drive more customers toward local, small businesses, including Encinitas Self Storage. The Encinitas Chamber of Commerce has been working with the city of Encinitas to help keep the Chamber and all other local businesses alive and running for many years to come. The Chamber also sponsors a Salute to Education for local students and teachers. They give a scholarship to 3 graduating high school seniors annually.
The Encinitas Self Storage contribution of $500.00 to the Encinitas Chamber of Commerce will most likely go towards the administrative costs of remaining open, as well as the scholarship fund.

The Miracle League of San Diego provides children with special needs the opportunity to play baseball in an organized league at two locations in San Diego County: Engel Family Field, a Little Padres Park in San Dieguito Park, Del Mar and Bell Middle School. The league has Spring and Fall seasons at both fields and accommodate players ages four and up. Every player is matched with a buddy for the entire season and each buddy is paired with the player based on his or her unique needs.
Smart Self Storage of Solana Beach chose to donate to the Miracle League because this organization continues to empowers disabled people, ages 4 to early 40s, who have down syndrome, cancer, autism, epilepsy, ADHD, muscular dystrophy and other illnesses, to have a great day by pairing them with a buddy and holding a series of baseball games for them every spring and fall. And has done so for more that 24 years.
The donation from Smart Self Storage of Solana Beach will be used to sponsor one of the teams within the Miracle League of San Diego. And will contribute to the operational expenses that Miracle League of San Diego incurs during the season.

Women's Empowerment International was founded in San Diego, California in 2006 by a group of visionary women with an ambitious goal: To assist desperately poor women living in underserved rural communities with tools to improve their lives. Together, they launched a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization focused on funding small, repayable loans to help women start modest, income generating businesses. With their income, women would support themselves, educate their children and slowly, strengthen their communities. In time and with great effort, the cycle of poverty is disrupted and change is created for future generations.
Over the last decade, in partnership with nonprofit organizations in six countries, Women’s Empowerment International has raised and funded more than $1 million dollars in micro-loans, training and practical support to 17,000 disadvantaged women worldwide.
The team at Sorrento Valley Self Storage could not be more proud to provide their 2019 community giving funds to Women’s Empowerment International. You can learn more about this incredible organization at: https://womenempowerment.org

The North Country Self Storage Facility Manager, Eric Jallo, met Michael Owen, President of VETality Corp. last year in the process of choosing a local charity for the facility’s annual community giving donation. The NCSS team was so impressed with the organization that they decided to bestow their 2019 contribution to VETality once again.
Michael and his fellow Marine brothers created VETality, a Non-Profit Organization, with the intentions of reducing the negative statistics associated with Veterans today, such as unemployment, suicide, and drug abuse. They understand firsthand the struggles of transitioning military personnel and the obstacles they face upon discharge from the armed forces. VETality Corp. VETality aims to reintegrate U.S. military Veterans back into society through education, training and career networking. VETality works to reduce Veteran unemployment, provide transitional assistance prior to separation, reduce Veteran suicide and drug use by providing proactive measures for military service members prior to their end of service date.
Upon entry to the program, VETality uses a custom made system that enables Veterans to choose a given pathway to potential employment. The program is designed to enable Veterans the ability to establish a foundation of tools and resources needed to sustain employment. Each Veteran is assessed and mentored through the program while working towards certification, education and vocational rehabilitation. The program at VETality Corp. enriches the already valuable qualities Veterans possess and couples it with new skills learned in the program, creating a more polished, highly qualified Veteran suitable for potential civilian employment.
North County Self Storage is proud to support these efforts and the incredible work Michael and his team accomplishes on behalf of veterans. There is so much more to learn about all of the programs VETality offers - check out the website at: http://vetalitycorp.org.

Smart Self Storage of Solana Beach decided to provide their donation this year to the Boys & Girls Clubs of San Dieguito. The team is impressed with the Club’s after school programs for kids. Our Facility Manager, Cory Hurtado, spoke with the CEO, Marineke Vandevort, about the success of the programs and how much it means to them to be able to help so many kids.
Her first day as the new CEO, Marineke was excited for the SBSS to visit and to offer their donation. Cory said, “I always have a great time when I visit the Boys & Girls Club and see all the happy kids there and, of course, the staff is always smiling.”
The Boys & Girls Clubs of San Dieguito is an organization dedicated to providing POSITIVE activities to develop the education, health, self-esteem and character of youth.
The Club’s seven branches provide diverse activities in after school programs to meet the interests of all members. Core programs encourage cooperative interactions with peers, adults, and family members, which enables kids to enhance self-esteem and fulfill their potential.

The team at Mira Mesa Self Storage has remained a big fan of The American History Theater. Mira Mesa Self Storage's Facility Manager, Chris Wood, says, “As a veteran, I find it touching and an honor to be asked again by this organization for assistance as they are still trying to get consistent support for funding.” The American History Theater provides meaningful support for female military veterans with Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome through dance and theater productions.
Over the years, the role of women in the military has changed drastically. Although women veterans have come a long way in attaining a sense of equality, many issues still plague the military ranks. For the first time in history, women are allowed on the front lines of war in combat arms positions. Currently, more than ever, there is space for female empowerment within our military ranks. American History Theater hopes to tactfully broach women's issues and provide sessions, forums, and support for women veterans nationwide.
The organization applies the donation towards operational costs, flyers and brochures for upcoming events, marketing materials, upgraded stage props and storage costs. Learn more about production and how you can contribute to the efforts of The American History Theater at: http://www.americanhistorytheater.org.

The team at Encinitas Self Storage wanted to provide their $500 donation to the local Cub Scout pack. Cub Scout Pack 774 has 15 scouts with 4 scout leaders. All of the leaders are parents of the scouts who volunteer their time. This contribution will help the pack fund enrichment activities that support the mission of preparing these young men to productively contribute to society.
Ruben Elenes, Facility Manager of Encinitas Self Storage, said, “Boy Scouts of America has always run dear to my heart. Their mission is to help young men develop into their very best selves through hands-on learning and goal based achievements. I believe our donation to this pack will help them out greatly!”
While Cub Scout Pack 774’s website is under construction, you can learn more about the Boy Scouts of America via their website.

Some of our Otay Crossing Self Storage team members have visited The Living Coast Discovery Center. Our facility manager, Adrian Nuno, describes it as, “…a neat place, sort of like a mini museum with live animals. We did arts and crafts with the kids and got to pet some animals. It was a lot of fun!” When the team learned that Living Coast is a non-profit organization committed to providing K-12 educational programs, caring for native plants and animals, and providing visitors with an interactive hands-on experience, they wanted to lend some support.
The Living Coast celebrated 30 years last year and remains focused on educating local K-12 students. When kids come to the Living Coast for a field trip or camp, they are immersed in nature and learn about local wildlife that can be found in their own back yards. They also learn how they can make a difference in our environment through changes in their daily lives at home. Last year, more than 25,000 students came through the doors for field trips and camps, and an additional 5,000+ students took part in the school outreach program where Living Coast staff members adapt the field trip program for the classroom for those schools unable to travel to the Living Coast Discovery Center.
Additional programs for families and visitors include VIP Animal Encounters, Birthday Parties, Overnight Adventures, and Trail Hikes! The Otay Crossing Self Storage donation helps to continue to maintain the life and health of San Diego Bay’s native animals and plants on one of the few remaining salt marsh wetlands on the Pacific Coast.

At San Diego Self Storage, we believe that community involvement is at the forefront of what differentiates our company from competitors. Each year, we look forward to our San Diego Food Bank Drive and the Toys for Tots campaign. And throughout the year, each of our locations generously donates time and funds to their favorite and local charitable organizations. The team at San Diego Self Storage’s corporate office is delighted to support several more San Diego-based charities through the year, such as the San Diego Gulls Foundation, Connor’s Cause, Big Brothers, Big Sisters Program, Doors of Change, the San Diego Police Department's K-9 Unit and so many more.
Geraldine Hill is the founder of On Your Feet Inc. - Family Resource Center and currently rents 10 large units at Jamacha Point Self Storage (JPSS). Geraldine chooses to store with JPSS because it is more cost effective than renting a warehouse. Over the years, the JPSS team has seen Geraldine and her volunteers give back to our community and to our country. Day to day, hot or cold, rain or shine, Geraldine and her staff spend numerous hours going through and preparing all of their donated items to give back to the community through the local events they have throughout the year.
With headquarters in Spring Valley, the mission of On Your Feet Inc. is “to provide assistance worldwide to low income families and individuals in order to improve their living conditions” On Your Feet Inc. helps families and individuals throughout Southern California and also assists in disaster relief across the country and abroad. Recently, Facility Manager, Rayleine Nungaray had the opportunity to speak with Geraldine about her recent visit to Redding CA, where Geraldine met many people who were affected by the wildfires. Geraldine heard many devastating stories, but was pleased to be able to pass out $100 gift cards to the families affected.
It is refreshing to see that the community is home to such amazing people. For this reason and more, the Jamacha Point Self Storage team wanted to feature Geraldine Hill and On Your Feet, Inc. - Family Resource Center as a loyal tenant, and also as the benefactor of JPSS’s 2018 charitable contribution.

PRMS Facility Manager, Myriam Villarreal said she and her team wanted to help spread the word about an inspiring non-profit organization which helps women and families find relief when going through a traumatic event. “The Comfort Cub is the world's very first weighted therapeutic teddy bear that was created by Marcella Johnson in 1999 after her infant son, George, passed away. She invented it to help other mothers who were suffering from the loss of their child. The teddy bear is specially weighted and is intended to feel like holding a newborn.”
The Comfort Cub has been distributing weighted cubs all over the world since 1999. Through the help of donations, they have delivered 13,442 cubs to women and families and hope to impact more lives each day. Furthermore, the Comfort Cubs can also help heal individuals going through any traumatic event at any age.

From humble beginnings in 1960 with a few women deciding to deliver meals to their elderly neighbors, to serving nearly a half a million meals throughout the entire county today, Meals on Wheels is devoted to the health, safety and well-being of San Diego seniors.
Meals on Wheels is the only agency providing meals for 7 days a week, including holidays. Currently the program covers the entire county, including delivery into the over 3,049 square miles of rural and unincorporated areas. Meals on Wheels San Diego County subsidizes 60% of the costs for meals, delivery, and other services provided, regardless of a senior’s ability to pay.
Our team at San Marcos Mini Storage decided to make their donation to the Meals on Wheels San Marcos facility. The Meals on Wheels San Marcos volunteers serve over 500 clients in their area. They also have an animal food program for their clients along with providing holiday and birthday gifts. The San Marcos Mini Storage team was delighted to provide their charitable gift to such a deserving program with wonderful volunteers.

Passion 4 K.I.D.S. (Kids In Desperate Situations) is a 501 (c) (3) non-profit charity dealing with handicapped, neglected, abandoned, abused and underprivileged children of any race, color and creed as well as children in acute, life-threatening, emergency situations in the United States.
These are the “forgotten” children whose young lives have been turned upside down that fall through the cracks with little or no insurance or government programs available to help them. Truly nothing brings greater joy than to put a smile on their faces and try to lighten their load. Passion 4 K.I.D.S. helpers wear many faces, depending on each child’s individual circumstances.
Founders, Charles and Linda Van Kessler, have a passion for kids – their kids, other people’s kids, kids that are hurting, kids that are “special” – any kid! That’s why they created Passion 4 K.I.D.S.
The mission of the organization spoke to Olivenhain Self Storage's Resident Manager, Kymberly Davis, who after difficult and unsuccessful pregnancies was able to adopt children. Kimberly herself is adopted, so she was overjoyed to see how much Passion 4 K.I.D.S. helps kids and simply lets them know they are loved. The team at OSS agreed that Passion 4 K.I.D.S. is a wonderful and deserving organization which would truly benefit from a charitable donation.

The capacity to care defines the best of who and what we are in communities. In that spirit, HomeAid San Diego has forged a partnership of builders, care providers, community leaders and donors. We build shelters for the temporarily homeless and in doing so, we help people begin new lives.” -Mark Read, HomeAid San Diego founding Board Member.
This year, Sorrento Mesa Self Storage selected HomeAid San Diego as the benefactor of their charitable donation. The team stated as their reason for choosing HomeAid San Diego, “San Diego County has the 4th largest homeless population in the U.S. and is ranked 10th nationally with over 1,500 members of homeless families with children. It is unfortunate and heartbreaking to know that the homeless live in the same city as us, but will never get to experience the city the way we do, due to mental illness, unemployment and many other contributing factors which have ultimately lead to homelessness. We believe that with our donation, we can help make a change and have a positive impact within our community!”

On Friday, April 13th, the team at Golden Triangle Self Storage (GTSS) presented a check for $500.00 to Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF), their charity of choice for 2018. Pictured from left to right: Greg Gamble and Dave Haller from GTSS, and from JDRF, Thu Le, Cindy Lang, Zoey Mirsky, Deanna Kasper and Sean McParland.
JDRF is the leading global organization funding Type 1 diabetes (T1D) research. Their mission is to accelerate life-changing breakthroughs to cure, prevent and treat T1D and its complications. Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is an autoimmune disease in which a person’s pancreas stops producing insulin, a hormone people need to get energy from food. T1D strikes both children and adults, and its onset has nothing to do with diet or lifestyle. There is currently nothing you can do to prevent it, and there is no cure. Cindy Lang, JDRF Office Manager says, “We’ve funded over $10 million of projects locally at these corporations: Calibr, Dexcom, Genomics Institute of the Novartis Foundation, La Jolla Institute, UC San Diego PDRC, Salk Institute, The Scripps Research Institute, Tandem Diabetes, ViaCyte and Bigfoot Biomedical. Plus, our Community Outreach Resources, which services the local San Diego area, provides resources for adults, teens and families afflicted with Type 1 diabetes (T1D). We give out Bags of Hope to newly diagnosed children which provides information, support and caregivers with fundamental type 1 diabetes information. It includes: Rufus the Bear (our signature stuffed animal that has type 1), an activity book, glucose meter and educational materials to help the family, all contained in a nice backpack.”
The local San Diego chapter for JDRF is located about a mile from the GTSS facility. After the team learned more about what JDRF does and how the organization serves San Diego, it was an easy decision to provide this year’s donation to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.

2018 marks the fourth year of our Community Giving Project, allowing us to continue the tradition of giving back to San Diego. We love this project! San Diego Self Storage facilities span San Diego County from Temecula to Otay Mesa. The project launched with a goal to find a way for all of our locations to develop meaningful ties to their local communities. We give each site $500, which they may contribute to any organization they see fit. We contributed to a variety of philanthropies in 2017, with charities benefiting children and animals at the top of the list. Our teams have also chosen to help fight cancer, contribute to local history and humanitarian efforts, as well as with job training, arts programs, women’s safety and more.
Casa Familiar, Inc. is a non-profit local organization that was founded in 1973 dedicated to serving residents in South San Diego County (Pictured above is CEO, Lisa Cuestas and Otay Mesa Self Storage Manager, Zabdiel Zavaleta). Casa Familiar offers a host of programs to the community such as after school programs for toddlers and teens, art/culture programs and other social services. Casa Familiar also has a family fitness center where the community can participate in fitness activities like zumba, yoga, boot camp and even offers senior classes.
It's great local organizations like Casa Familiar that are really making a positive impact in lives of all ages. As the leading service and community development organization in the community of San Ysidro, it was easy for our team at Otay Mesa Self Storage to select Casa Familiar as the beneficiary of this year’s donation.
Community Giving Project - March 2018
For the second year, Smart Self Storage of Solana Beach donated to The Boys & Girls Club of San Dieguito (pictured above). Our staff was really excited to have the opportunity to reach out and give something back to the local community. After a rewarding experience last year, the team wanted to support the program again. The Boys & Girls Clubs of San Dieguito is an organization dedicated to providing positive activities to develop the education, health, self-esteem and character of youth. The Club House Manager, Ally Hanlo, is super friendly and great with the kids. CEO, Marineke Vendervort is amazing and dedicated to providing fun programs. The Boys & Girls Club of San Dieguito staff are truly great people who love their job and love helping others.
Community Giving Project - February 2018
2018 marks the fourth year of our Community Giving Project, allowing us to continue the tradition of giving back to San Diego. We love this project! San Diego Self Storage facilities span San Diego County from Carlsbad to Otay Mesa.
This year, Mira Mesa Self Storage has selected Boy Scout Troop 1203 as the recipient of their donation. The team at Mira Mesa Self Storage believes in the development of our youth and acquisition of skills to build confidence to mold their character and be future leaders of our community. The “Campership Fund” is an amazing program that will enable the development of Troop 1203’s young men, while offering a great experience with nature.
Troop 1203 is in the Rancho Mesa District of the San Diego-Imperial Council in the Western Region of the Boy Scouts of America. Chartered by the Mira Mesa Moose Lodge, the troop is still growing in membership. Some of the member families struggle to meet the financial requirements of the programs. It is the hope of the team at Mira Mesa Self Storage that their $500 donation towards this program will help those families participate. Helping to ensure that no scout members have to carry that burden, the donation allows these young men the opportunity to grow with their peers as they participate in the educational programs provided by Scout Troop 1203.

Everyone at San Diego Self Storage is proud to embark on the third year of our Community Giving Project, carrying on a tradition of giving back to San Diego. We love this project! San Diego Self Storage facilities span San Diego County from Temecula to Otay Mesa. We wanted to find a way for all 17 of our locations to develop meaningful ties to their local communities. We’ve given each site $500, which they may contribute to any organization they see fit. We’ve contributed to a variety of philanthropies, with charities benefiting children and animals at the top of the list. Our teams have also chosen to help fight cancer, contribute to local history and humanitarian efforts.
The staff at each of our facilities chooses an organization that’s meaningful to them, impresses them, or sometimes, because they have personal experience with the cause. That was the case with our team at Sorrento Mesa Self Storage. Assistant Manager, Ciara Silvas, provided a therapy dog for her mother who struggled with depression from nerve damage. Ciara saw first hand how a therapy dog helped to change her mother’s life for the best. Today, Ciara’s mom is leading a happy life, with her dog right by her side.
It was this personal story that influenced the SMSS staff'’s decision to provide their donation to Paws’itive Teams. The Mission of Paws'itive Teams is to enhance the lives of individuals with special needs who live in San Diego County, by utilizing the skills of highly trained Service and Therapy Dogs. Paws’itive Teams will be using the Sorrento Mesa Self Storage donation to assist with costs related to service dog training. The team at SMSS believes this is a great organization and were more than happy to make a contribution.

San Marcos Pop Warner is one of only a few organizations dedicated to kids ages 6 to 15 in the San Marcos area. This caught the attention of our San Marcos Mini Storage team. The staff at SMMS learned that San Marcos Pop Warner requires that players meet expectations with grades and education goals in order to play. Pop Warner also contributes to many community-based projects and encourages their young athletes to be involved with the community. “Our goal is to encourage and increase youth participation in football and cheerleading by providing a safe and positive playing environment for all participants, and to instill life-long values of teamwork, dedication and a superior work ethic in the classroom and on the field,” reads the mission statement. The Challenger Division was created with the mission of bringing the Pop Warner experience to special needs individuals in the San Marcos community as Players or Cheerleaders.
For all of these reasons, and many more, The San Marcos Mini Storage staff enthusiastically chose San Marcos Pop Warner as the beneficiary of this year’s charitable contribution.

After careful consideration of several local charities, the team at Golden Triangle Self Storage opted to donate to Break the Silence Against Domestic Violence (BTS). While speaking with Founder, Kristen Paruginog, who is a survivor of domestic violence herself, the staff was impressed with how she has built the organization from the ground up. Kristen courageously shared her story of survival on social media in hopes to inspire other victims living in silence to break free. The outpouring of support from men and women was inspiring and sparked her desire to resign from her position in her career and make Break the Silence against Domestic Violence an official non-profit organization.
BTS offers assistance and safety to victims of domestic violence. Through a variety of programs BTS fulfills their mission to educate communities on the dangers of domestic violence, connect victims and survivors, and assist them in the transformation of their lives – by providing a personal development retreat, scholarships, financial empowerment, and innovative awareness campaigns. BTS also provides a survivor’s helpline that is available Monday-Sunday. The office is just down the street from the GTSS facility, which further compelled our team to lend a helping hand to a neighbor. To learn more about Break The Silence, please visit the website. If you need help, please call the BTS Survivor Sister helpline at 855-BTS-1777 or you can call the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-787-3224.

A Reason To Survive (ARTS) is a non-profit organization that provides a 20,000 square foot space where the youth of the community can go to learn, build and express their creativity through a variety of different art programs and supportive therapy programs. When National/54 Self Storage was researching organizations to donate to, they somewhat stumbled across ARTS, but immediately learned that ARTS was embedded into the National City community as a very special organization. The amount of art programs, volunteer work, and support/counsel programs available to National City’s youth is very inspiring and the reason the team at National/54 Self Storage wanted to gift their donation to ARTS.

The American History Theater strives to raise awareness for, and honor, those who have served and currently serve in our nation's armed forces. Through theater and stage production, AHT is able to deliver its message in a unique and meaningful manner. Performances bring audiences back to poignant moments in our nation's military history and emotionally illustrate what our service members have proudly endeavored through decades of war. Many of their productions provide insight into issues faced by female service members.
Mira Mesa Self Storage chose The American History Theater because of the amazing programs they put together onstage in a theater format; enlightening the community of San Diego, the city’s Veterans and their families with a powerful message that cannot be forgotten. President and CEO, Mr. Hal Berry is pictured with Mira Mesa Self Storage Manager, Chris Wood. This is the second year that Mira Mesa Self Storage has provided their donation to The American History Theater.

Carlsbad Self Storage has proudly contributed their donation to the County of San Diego, Department of Animal Services. The story of how the Spirit Fund was established captured our staff’s attention, and their hearts. The Spirit Veterinary Medical Fund was created in July 2008, after a 10-week-old puppy was savagely beaten near our border with Mexico. The beating was seen on a Border Patrol surveillance camera several miles away. Border Patrol officers went to the site, rescued the battered puppy and called for a Department of Animal Services officer.
The little puppy came in with many broken bones and veterinarians could tell this wasn’t her first beating. She needed extensive medical assistance. The man who beat her could break her bones, but he couldn't break her spirit. Despite her brutal injuries, this little dog sought out the attention and love of everyone at the shelter. She was given the name, Spirit. When news of the savage beating was broadcast, donations poured in from around the country. Soon there was enough money to help other animals too.
County Animal Services established a permanent fund so more animals in need of expensive treatment could be helped. A team of 128 animal welfare professionals and over 400 active and dedicated volunteers care for more than 25,000 cats, dogs, livestock and exotic animals each year that are lost, abandoned or neglected. With gifts to the Spirit Fund, these animals can receive the treatment needed to be adopted into new and loving, forever homes.

Two nurses working in the field of public health noticed first-hand how more and more families are struggling to acquire the basic necessities of life in today's economy. A new baby puts an added strain on already limited resources, and many babies lack appropriate items of clothing and blankets to stay warm and thrive during their crucial first year of life. Steve, Tally and Brage, the awesome team at Poway Road Mini Storage, enjoy helping less fortunate families in need of clothes for their babies.
That’s why they chose to provide their donation to Gently Hugged. Gently Hugged collects gently used or new clothing in Preemie to 12 month sizes along with blankets and accessories (hats, socks, bibs). Poway Road Mini Storage’s $500 donation will enable Gently Hugged to purchase basic clothing for the first 6 months for 5 babies! Pictured above: Steve, Tally, and Brage from PRMS happily present the check to Judy from Gently Hugged.

Life & Strength is an international, non-profit organization and has been helping people living in vulnerable places since 2013. Life & Strength’s goal is to promote solidarity and support between people to contribute to the development and welfare of all humans, particularly those most in need both materially and spiritually. They have extended their hands to help communities in need on both sides of the US- Mexican border. Life & Strength serves many aspects of the local community. For example, they contribute to children’s education and help them acquire uniforms, materials and other tools to succeed. Life & Strength also creates youth support programs to provide youth with guidance, keeping them away from negative influences. The organization's volunteers take pride in assisting seniors in low-income senior homes.
The team at Otay Mesa Self Storage wanted to bring attention to this local, charitable organization, which has already made a positive impact on the community in just its few years of existence. Encinitas Self Storage chose to donate to Community Resource Center (CRC) this year and are very proud that they did! CRC has been helping the community since 1979 by distributing food to the homeless and less fortunate, among other services. What really stood out about CRC is the services they provide to victims of domestic violence (DV). There is an emergency shelter center available for DV victims or homeless, and counseling for adults/children to help heal. The Encinitas Self Storage (ESS) donation of $500 will help DV victims with counseling services, help provide a family of 4 with healthy food for 1 month and/or help give shelter to a homeless family. While the ESS team was visiting, the CRC staff was kind enough to give a tour of the mini grocery store which is 100% dependent on donations from local stores and markets. While many folks qualify to benefit from these services, CRC will not turn away anyone that is hungry.
Pictured above are ESS Assistant Manager, Karina Martinez, Community Resource Center CEO, Isabel St. Germain Singh and Development Director Peggy Pico with ESS Storage Consultant, Mike Fraustein. Also present was CRC’s Marketing & Special Events Manager, Lauren Montague, who was kind enough to take the photo. Karina reports, “It was a really good learning experience as we both didn’t know how much they help out those in need. Thanks to San Diego Self Storage for allowing us to learn more about our community, through the opportunity to make a contribution!”
To learn more about the Community Resource Center, visit their website: www.crcncc.org. The Encinitas Self Storage team often refers tenants to CRC if tenants are looking to get rid of unwanted items. CRC also has a thrift store that is, again, 100% dependent on donations. Lots of items tossed in the dumpster can be of great value to the Community Resource Center, so before you dump it, ask the ESS office staff if it can be put to good use!

El Cajon Dog and Cat Animal Rescue (EDCAR) has been rescuing homeless animals and finding them a place to call home for the past 10 years. EDCAR partners with Petco to rescue 200-300 animals per year.
Jamaica Point Self Storage chose to donate their $500.00 to EDCAR for the second time since the giving project began. The JPSS team finds that EDCAR founder, Mike Canaris, has an amazing heart, rescuing dogs and cats not only in U.S., but in Mexico as well. Not one animal is euthanized, and Mike fosters the rescued animals for as long as it takes to find these furry friends a forever home. JPSS Facility Manager, Rayleine Nungaray, said, “When I get a chance, I love going down to visit the pups and kitty-cats and donate whatever I can, whether it be time, money or food. Anything helps.”
The last time JPSS donated to EDCAR, Mike was able to pay for five spay/neuter procedures and vaccinations. The 2017 donation will make it possible for many of these animals, both young and old, to find their loving families.

Escondido Community Child Development Center (staff pictured above at North County Self Storage) is a non-profit preschool for children ages 4 months to kindergarten. They provide services in support of families working, looking for work or for parents pursuing a higher education. All applicants are from low-income homes in the Escondido area. They serve over 300 children at two Child Development Centers in the Escondido area.
The child development program includes a full range of education, health and social services designed to assist children and their families to maximize their full learning potential. They also have on-site health screenings, including vision, dental health and more. Each child is served two main meals and two snacks per day.
This charity means a lot to the team at North County Self Storage. Our staff empathizes with the struggle many of us face to raise children while working or getting a higher education. Our Facility Manager, Cody Blew, said of the donation, "It shows the children that you can accomplish anything you put your mind to and that there is someone out there who can help."
The team at North County Self Storage chimed in to say, “We are so thankful that we can help this organization with all they do.”

The team at Butterfield Ranch Self Storage, led by the Facility Manager, Cristhian Gironas, has been instrumental in helping to grow the Temecula Youth Baseball Champions League. Cristhian has been a coach and volunteer, as well as a visionary in the development of this truly special baseball league. The Champions League was created to allow children with physical and mental disabilities the chance to share in America’s past time, baseball. The league began with only 14 kids, seven players per team and 2 coaches or volunteers to help fill the gaps in the outfield.
Thanks to the donations from Butterfield Ranch Self Storage and other sponsors, the league grew year by year and the costs have been kept relatively low for parents. TYB Champions League enjoys the largest group of children playing this year with over 90 kids signed up.
Cristhian wanted to voice his sincere thanks and said, “We’ve received support from Murrieta Mesa High School, Chaparral High School and Great Oak High School (the rep is my little brother Matthew who has come out since the beginning to help volunteer at our TYB Champions League events). We have worked with Amy Minniear, JP Raineri, Kevin Rochford and Dawn Madera, to name a few, who have been here since the beginning of the league and supported it fully. I am happy to say thanks to San Diego Self Storage and Butterfield Ranch Self Storage for allowing us to make yearly donations to a charity group which is making a true difference in the community.”

Smart Self Storage of Eastlake has created a bond with Second Chance Dog Rescue. The Second Chance Dog Rescue provides spay/neuter services, offers medical care where necessary, fosters and finds new homes for dogs in the San Diego Area. This is the third year Second Chance has benefited from the project. Smart Self Storage of Eastlake Manager, Dawn said, “As the ‘mom’ of two rescue dogs this is a subject that’s close to my heart and since everyone on Team Eastlake has a pet and is an animal lover, it was a natural fit. We are all very happy San Diego Self Storage provided us with the opportunity to help such a worthwhile organization.” The staff expressed gratitude for the opportunity to support local causes in their community with a meaningful contribution.
Stay tuned as our other facilities across San Diego County start making their donations. Everyone at San Diego Self Storage is proud to support our Community Giving Project and appreciates the opportunity to make a positive impact in our local San Diego communities.
