In addition to being loyal tenants of San Marcos Mini Storage (SMMS) for more than four years, the Lake San Marcos Kiwanis Club Foundation received the SMMS’s 2019 charitable contribution as part of San Diego Self Storage’s Community Giving Program.
 
Every year, the Lake San Marcos Kiwanis reaches the peak of their purpose by awarding several thousands of dollars in scholarships to local youth. During a two-day event in May, 25 local students received $22,500 in scholarships, most of which are for $1000 each. "These scholarships represent what we Kiwanians have worked so hard for throughout the year. Primarily, funds were raised by the pancake breakfast in February and by private donations," said Kiwanis President, Jim Alden. There are five types of scholarships aimed at helping students with higher education expenses: regular high school scholarships for four year colleges, Ruth Underwood Memorial scholarships, Dana Joell Gillis-Hardy Memorial scholarships, Community College scholarships, and a Future Farmers of America scholarship.  Alden added, "Most of the scholarships were for $1,000 each and will be sent to these students upon registration next fall."
